Sensor fusion is the practice of combining signals from multiple sensors so a system gets a better estimate of the world than any one sensor could provide by itself. Each sensor has blind spots. A camera may struggle in glare or darkness. A gas sensor may say something hazardous is present without showing exactly where. Lidar may describe shape well without identifying the material or risk level. Sensor fusion matters because it lets the system cross-check those signals and build a more reliable estimate of location, state, and hazard.

AI makes sensor fusion more useful because models can learn patterns across different data streams that do not line up perfectly in time or format. That is especially important in mobile robotics, hazardous inspection, and autonomous systems, where decisions often depend on incomplete or noisy evidence. A robot that fuses visual, thermal, acoustic, and chemical signals can often detect and classify a problem earlier than one relying on a single modality.
What To Keep In Mind
More sensors do not automatically mean better decisions. Fusion depends on calibration, timing alignment, trustworthy uncertainty estimates, and clear fallback behavior when one sensor degrades. If those pieces are weak, combining inputs can amplify confusion rather than reduce it.
