Las Vegas ranks as the number one domestic travel destination this winter, according to the American Society of Travel Agents' (ASTA)/ Fodor's Winter 2001 Hot Spots Survey. For Americans traveling abroad, London is the favorite, according to survey respondents.
Slightly more than twenty-two percent of ASTA member travel agents surveyed reported that Las Vegas is the number one domestic travel destination for this winter. Las Vegas edged out last winter's favorite, Orlando, which dropped to second place with 20.4 percent of the votes. Holding the number three and four spots are Hawaii and New York City. Hawaii earned 9.9 percent of the vote, while New York City held onto fourth place with 5.4 percent. Florida is the most popular state for winter travel, accounting for 32 percent of all responses, followed by Nevada with slightly more than 22 percent of responses. Other popular winter travel states are Hawaii (10%), California (11%) and Colorado (5%).
"Being named top domestic destination bodes extremely well for Las Vegas, particularly during a time when more travelers are choosing to stay closer to home," said Manuel J. Cortez, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). "Las Vegas' reputation as the best place in the world to take a break from reality certainly enhances its appeal right now."
With nationwide advertising and promotions, as well as targeted efforts in key feeder markets, the LVCVA is working to reach out to an already interested visitor base. The Web-based sweepstakes "It's Time For Vegas," running through January 15, offers people a chance to win a Grand Prize trip for six to Las Vegas and $2,500 spending money.
