A collaborative robot, often shortened to cobot, is a robot designed to work more safely near people and to make more mixed, flexible automation tasks practical. Cobots usually emphasize easier programming, lower payloads, force-limited operation, and simpler workcell integration compared with larger traditional industrial robots.
How It Works
A cobot typically combines sensors, safety controls, and motion software so it can operate in environments where people may also be present. That does not mean every cobot is automatically safe in every situation. It means the robot is built for more direct human interaction and more flexible automation workflows than a fully fenced high-speed cell.
Why It Matters
Cobots matter because they expand where automation is economically and operationally feasible. They are often used for machine tending, packaging, assembly, inspection, and repetitive support tasks where companies want automation without the cost and rigidity of a large traditional robot cell.
Where You See It
Cobots are central to Industrial Robotics because much of the current automation wave is about making robots easier to deploy, easier to teach, and more useful in mixed human-machine environments.
