Human in the loop describes an AI workflow in which a person remains involved at important decision points instead of leaving the entire process to automation. The human may review uncertain outputs, correct mistakes, approve actions, label data, or handle edge cases that the system should not decide alone.
Why It Matters
Many AI systems are good at handling routine cases but still unreliable on unusual, ambiguous, or high-stakes inputs. A human-in-the-loop design reduces that risk by letting automation handle the easy cases while sending uncertain or sensitive ones to a person. That makes it especially useful in document processing, healthcare, fraud review, safety systems, moderation, and other settings where the cost of a silent mistake can be high.
How It Works
A common pattern is confidence-based escalation. The model produces a result and a confidence signal, and the workflow routes lower-confidence cases to a reviewer. Human corrections can then be fed back into training or quality-control processes. In stronger systems, this is not treated as a failure. It is treated as part of normal operations.
What To Keep In Mind
Human in the loop is not the same thing as fully manual work with an AI veneer. A good design uses people where they create the most value: exceptions, approvals, policy-sensitive decisions, and training feedback. If everything goes to a reviewer, automation has not really improved the process. If nothing ever does, the system is probably taking on too much risk.
