Bias mitigation is the work of identifying, reducing, and monitoring unfair bias in AI systems. It is not usually a single fix. In practice, it involves data review, evaluation across groups, model adjustments, threshold choices, workflow safeguards, and human oversight. The goal is not to pretend bias can be removed once and for all, but to keep reducing harmful distortion over time.

Where Bias Mitigation Happens

Bias mitigation can happen before training, during model development, and after deployment. Teams may collect more representative data, improve label quality, rebalance examples, adjust decision thresholds, add review steps, or track outcomes after release to see whether fairness degrades in the real world.

This matters because many unfair outcomes do not come from one dramatic error. They emerge from many small choices across the system. A fairer model may still become problematic if the deployment context changes or if the people using it assume it is more objective than it really is.

Why Bias Mitigation Is Ongoing

Bias mitigation is an ongoing governance practice, not a one-time optimization task. Real populations change. Business processes change. Data pipelines change. A model that looked acceptable in one setting may become unfair in another.

That is why good bias mitigation is tightly connected to monitoring, documentation, and accountability. The technical system matters, but so do the review process and the people responsible for acting on what they find.
