In AI, bias refers to systematic skew or error that shapes how a system behaves and whom it serves well or poorly. Bias can come from data, labeling, historical inequities, modeling choices, objective design, or deployment context. It is not only a technical issue. It often reflects social patterns that become embedded in data and systems.
What Bias Looks Like
Bias may appear as worse performance for certain groups, distorted recommendations, unbalanced search results, unfair moderation, or decision systems that reproduce existing inequalities. Sometimes bias is obvious. Other times it hides behind average performance that looks acceptable until results are broken down by subgroup or real-world context.
Bias in AI should not be confused with the mathematical bias term used inside models. The fairness sense of bias is about systematic distortion in outcomes, representation, or treatment.
Why Bias Matters
Bias matters because AI systems increasingly shape access to information, services, opportunities, and automated decisions. A system that is merely inaccurate is a problem. A system that is systematically inaccurate for some people is a deeper problem involving fairness, trust, and accountability.
This is why responsible AI work includes measurement, auditing, and ongoing correction rather than assuming a model is neutral by default.
