Sun Microsystems today announced that Vodafone, the world's largest mobile carrier, has selected java.com to be a complimentary showcase for its range of Vodafone live! Java technology-based games.

java.com is a leading consumer website dedicated to Java technology and was developed in response to the popularity of Java software on the desktop, mobile phones and PDAs. The site now features popular Java technology-based games available to Vodafone live! customers, potential customers and consumers around the world. Millions will be able to access a single, central location listing hundreds of leading games such as: "Tomb Raider: Osiris Codex," "Tetris," and "Urban Freestyle Soccer."

"We're delighted to have our consumer game offerings on java.com," said Guy Laurence, global marketing director, Vodafone Global Product and Content Services. "Through Sun and the java.com website, Vodafone will be able to present its Vodafone live! games offering to an even wider audience and reach over six million monthly java.com visitors. The Java platform delivers the power and functionality our customers want for every time, everywhere game playing."

"The Java platform continues to prove its value to carriers, developers and consumers, through world-class security, performance and now record deployments and downloads," said Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president of software, Sun Microsystems. "With over 150 million Java-enabled handsets worldwide, and growing support for Sun's new Java Desktop System, opportunities, like the technology itself, are emerging everywhere. We are thrilled to be working with the world's leading carrier, Vodafone, to present the latest cool Vodafone live! games and content for the mobile Java gaming enthusiast at java.com."

"Highlighting our wireless games on java.com gives our applications greater visibility, said Tim Walsh," president, THQ Wireless. "Java is a great platform to develop games on, as it gives developers a reliable solution that delivers unprecedented client and server performance. It is clear that Sun is committed to competing in this space, and we are very pleased to provide the company with a compelling product offering for consumers."

java.com now offers direct links to the websites of 14 of the countries offering Vodafone live! including Australia, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK. Current Vodafone live! subscribers can download the games to their handsets using the easy website instructions. This collaboration also benefits Java technology mobile developers by giving them and their applications greater visibility.
