
“No neutral required” answers one installation question. It does not establish compatibility with the lamp, the other switches controlling it, the wiring condition, or the smart-home system. Choose the complete combination before purchasing the wall control.

What “two-wire” does and does not mean
A conventional switch can interrupt a lighting circuit without powering a radio or controller. A smart device needs power for its electronics as well as a way to control the light. Some no-neutral designs take a small standby current through the lighting load; the details depend on the device. Other product requirements, including protective grounding, still matter.
This URL originally covered Power Integrations’ 2017 DER-622 reference design. Its dated engineering announcement explains how current accumulating in an LED driver can produce brief illumination while nominally off, often called ghosting. The reference design illustrates an engineering approach; its component specifications are not approval for a retail switch or a household installation.
No-neutral is not a universal synonym for “only two connections.” For example, Leviton specifies an earth ground and bridge for its DN no-neutral family. Ask a qualified electrician to identify the wiring and confirm that the proposed device is permitted and suitable. Do not substitute a ground for a required neutral or infer wire function from color alone.

Use actual electrical watts, not the incandescent-equivalent brightness printed on an LED package. If there are six hypothetical 8-watt lamps, the connected lamp power is 48 watts, not six times the “60-watt equivalent” label. Even that correct sum does not prove dimming compatibility: the manufacturer’s fixture/bulb guidance and load restrictions still apply.
Keep a screenshot or saved copy of the compatibility result with the exact model suffixes. Two bulbs with similar packaging can have different drivers. Ask about replacements you can obtain later, especially for a group of integrated fixtures.

These examples illustrate different requirements, not a ranking or a promise that either suits your home. Specifications, supported accessories, and regional versions must be checked again for the exact purchase.
Lutron Caséta PD-6WCL
Lutron’s Caséta load-control specification (PDF) identifies this as a no-neutral dimmer and describes hub-based app control. Use the Lutron LED Compatibility Tool to select the exact dimmer and investigate a proposed lamp. Do not transfer the requirements of another Caséta model to it.
Leviton DN6HD-1RW
The DN6HD-1RW product page specifies an MLWSB Wi-Fi Bridge for smart features and lists compatible wire-free companions for multi-location operation. Include the bridge and any companions in the shopping list and cost comparison.
Read the installation and support documents for the device, bridge, and companion separately. Check whether the desired integration depends on internet access or a cloud service, and which controls continue locally. Do not infer that a product communicates directly over Wi-Fi merely because the overall system uses Wi-Fi.
Describe the symptom before changing parts
A light glowing while off, flickering at its lowest setting, failing to start at a low level, and a device disappearing from an app are different observations. Record when the symptom occurs and whether it follows a bulb replacement, an added fixture, a network change, or a new wall control.
- Glow or brief flashes while off: ask the manufacturer about the exact lamp/control pairing and approved remedies.
- Flicker or dropout while dimming: check compatibility and any manufacturer-supported low-end adjustment.
- Only one control location works: verify the supported companion arrangement with the installer.
- Wall control works but app control fails: investigate the specified bridge, network, account, and pairing path.
These patterns guide troubleshooting but do not rule out a wiring fault. Do not add an improvised resistor, capacitor, or bypass to suppress a symptom. An accessory is appropriate only where the exact device’s manufacturer documents it and a qualified installer confirms the application. A remedy for an on/off switch may not be approved for a dimmer.
Unexpected heat, burning odor, crackling, or visible damage calls for stopping use and professional assessment, not app resets or experiments with different bulbs. Installation, fault-finding inside electrical boxes, and any wiring changes belong with a qualified electrician following the device instructions and local rules.
Ask for a small, repeatable handover check
Once installation is complete, ask the installer to demonstrate normal wall operation, the usable dimming range if applicable, and every supported control location. Confirm that the selected lamps start reliably and do not show unwanted off-state illumination under the demonstrated conditions.
Then demonstrate the features you actually bought: a schedule, remote control, and the intended smart-home integration. Discuss the documented behavior during network or power loss rather than disconnecting electrical wiring to test it. Record the device and lamp model numbers, approved settings, bridge placement, account owner, and support contact.
If the lighting will be used by guests or someone who does not use a phone, include them in the wall-control demonstration. Clear everyday operation is as important as an elaborate scene. During a kitchen renovation, settle lighting and switch requirements early enough for the electrician and cabinet installer to coordinate them.
