Zoran Corporation today announced that its advanced Vaddis DVD multimedia processor powers Toshiba's latest generation of DVD-R and DVD-RAM hard disk drive recorders now shipping to retail stores in Japan.

Toshiba's new RD-X3 family of recorders, including the RD-X3, RD-XS30 and RD-XS40, allows consumers to record up to six hours of content on a single DVD-R or DVD-RAM disc.

These recorders can create DVD-Video format on DVD-R media, as well as DVD-VR format on DVD-RAM media. Data files stored in DVD-R and DVD-Video format can be played back on most DVD players on the market. In addition to enabling cut, assemble, and edit capabilities, the RD-X3 recorder series provides reliable, high-performance authoring of multimedia content to a DVD disc.

The 80 to 160-gigabyte hard disk drives in the new models deliver personal video recording (PVR) time-shifting capabilities that allow consumers to time shift and record live television programs or to record programs like traditional VCRs.

The onboard Ethernet connection in the RD-X3 and the RD-XS40 enables support for three types of home networks: wired, wireless, and peer-to-peer. The flexibility of this Ethernet connection enables key features such as an Internet-based Electronic Program Guide (iEPG) for easy program selection. The Web-based DVD recorder management feature provides program recordings via PCs, cell phones, and the Internet and the Rich DVD authoring function allows a user to build multimedia composites using multiple templates.

"Toshiba's new DVD recorders offer consumers a choice of flexible, powerful, and high-quality recording solutions that connect to the web, a PC or cell phone as well as the TV. For the past six years, Zoran's Vaddis-based DVD solutions have allowed us to meet aggressive time-to-market and cost reduction goals for new products such as the RD-X3 series of DVD recorder products," said Mr. Kensuke Adachi, general manager, Digital Media Development Center at Toshiba. "We look forward to working with Zoran to deliver additional industry-leading DVD recording products as the market grows and matures."

"For quite sometime we've shared a vision with Toshiba to enable DVD recorders to readily connect to other consumer devices. In delivering the Vaddis-based RD-X3 series of recorders, we have realized our joint goal," said Camillo Martino, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Zoran Corporation. "In January, the Consumer Electronics Show selected the RD-X2 recorder for an Innovation Award. We expect that the new generation RD-X3 series will also garner awards for its high performance and connectivity capability, sure to be popular with consumers. Once again Toshiba demonstrates why it is a leader in the consumer electronics industry."

"We are honored to support Toshiba with the combined expertise of our long-term partner Zoran Corporation in delivering the new Vaddis-based DVD recorder product line with new connectivity capabilities," said Mr. Akira Kashiwagi, CEO, Fujifilm Microdevices Co., Ltd.
