The following is a statement from AMA Chair, Timothy T. Flaherty, MD:
The AMA today announced its strong support for Richard H. Carmona, MD, a longtime AMA member, for Surgeon General of the United States.
"Committed to disaster preparedness long before September 11th, Dr. Carmona is a natural choice for Surgeon General during a time of turmoil in our nation. As a trauma surgeon, with a national reputation in critical care and emergency medical systems administration, Dr. Carmona created the first trauma care system in southern Arizona. He currently serves as a Clinical Professor of Surgery, Public Health and Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona.
"Born in Harlem and the first member of his family to graduate from college, Dr. Carmona has epitomized the American dream, distinguishing himself as the University of California's top medical school graduate and Pima County Medical Society's 'Physician of the Year.'
"With a masters in public health policy and a personal commitment to emergency preparedness, Dr. Carmona would bring knowledge, expertise and experience to the office of Surgeon General. Thoroughly professional and a consummate communicator, Dr. Carmona is a true physician leader. He will be a strong advocate for the health of Americans."
