Brillian Corporation today announced that JDS Uniphase products will serve as the light engine for Brillian's 720p rear-projection HDTVs. Brillian will demonstrate the JDS Uniphase light engines at the 2004 Consumer Electronics Show, Jan. 8 - 11, in Las Vegas.
JDS Uniphase will provide Brillian with a complete engine subassembly, including a color management system, imaging optics, and illumination source. The JDS Uniphase engine delivers extraordinary performance achieving on-screen contrast ratios with Brillian's panels, as high as 3000:1 with industry-leading brightness.
Brillian, a new entrant into the HDTV market, has developed the industry's first high-contrast liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) Gen II microdisplay architecture. The microdisplay technology, in combination with other leading technologies and components, such as JDS Uniphase's light engine, are being used to produce rear-projection LCoS HDTVs that deliver new contrast performance benchmarks and very crisp cinematic on-screen picture quality. The light engine, featuring Brillian's LCoS Gen II microdisplay panels, also offers high fill factor for vivid image reproduction without pixelation, rich color depth for high image fidelity, artifact-free video reproduction, and the long lifetimes suitable for consumer applications.
"Our vision is to unveil a family of LCoS-based rear-projection HDTVs for OEM customers that set new standards for image quality and performance," said Vincent Sollitto, Jr., president and CEO, Brillian. "Working with industry leaders, such as JDS Uniphase, is critical to this vision. JDS Uniphase not only has a proven track record in both the projection and microdisplay light engine market, but also provides us with critical technology and time-to-market advantages."
"We believe the JDS Uniphase light engines are ideally suited to cutting-edge HDTV products, such as those in development by Brillian," said Greg Miller, vice president and general manager of JDS Uniphase OCLI Products Division. "Working closely with our partners, we have been able to deliver unsurpassed contrast performance and a high-volume manufacturability advantage."
Brillian expects that its OEM-branded HDTV products featuring the JDS UNIPHASE engines will be available in retail outlets by mid-2004.
