Identify the publisher, choose the right meaning, and use pronunciation, examples, and citations.

A dictionary entry becomes useful when its meaning fits the sentence you are reading.

Use an online dictionary by starting with the sentence, identifying the word’s grammatical role, and choosing the sense that fits. The name “Webster” alone leaves the publisher and edition unclear. Check the site name and its editorial information before treating two Webster-branded resources as the same dictionary.

Identify the dictionary behind the name

Merriam-Webster's FAQ explains its publishing history and online dictionary. Merriam-Webster is a specific publisher; several dictionaries use Webster in their names. Record the actual publisher when recommending or citing a resource.

A general dictionary helps with ordinary word meanings and usage. A learner's dictionary may explain common vocabulary in simpler language. A specialist glossary can supply a meaning tied to law, medicine, engineering, or another field. Choose the type that matches the passage you are reading.

Read the parts of an entry in order

  1. Headword: confirm the spelling and that you have opened the intended word.
  2. Part of speech: find the noun, verb, adjective, or other use that fits the sentence.
  3. Sense: read the relevant definitions and labels, including any regional, dated, informal, or specialist use.
  4. Example: compare how the word works with nearby words.
  5. Pronunciation: use the publisher's audio or pronunciation key.

Merriam-Webster explains its notation in how to read pronunciation symbols. Read that key when a symbol is unfamiliar; dictionaries can use different transcription systems.

Keep word history separate from present meaning. An origin can explain how a word developed, while the definition and usage examples answer how it works in your passage. Likewise, a list of synonyms supplies candidates whose tone and grammar still need checking.

Try three meanings of bank

The Merriam-Webster entry for bank covers several uses. These original practice sentences show why context matters:

Match the meaning to the sentence
Practice sentenceClue in the sentenceMeaning to investigate
We sat on the bank beside the stream.Beside the streamThe ground bordering a body of water
The bank approved the loan.Approved the loanA financial institution
A bank of switches controls the lights.Of switchesA grouped row or arrangement

Substitute a short paraphrase into the sentence: “The financial institution approved the loan.” If the replacement fits the surrounding passage, you have a plausible sense. Then check the entry's grammatical information and example. If it fails, read the complete phrase; the meaning may belong to an idiom or compound.

For an unfamiliar verb, identify its base form and any accompanying preposition. Save the whole phrase in your vocabulary notes. A remembered single-word translation often loses the construction you need to use it accurately.

Save an entry you can find again

Keep the headword, selected meaning, one sentence of your own, publisher, exact entry URL, and access date. For assigned work, follow the requested citation style and inspect any generated citation before using it. A site's copyright year is different from an individual entry's revision date.

If two dictionaries seem to disagree, compare their scope, regional labels, part of speech, and examples. You may be reading different senses or editorial treatments. Describe the difference precisely instead of deciding from the number of search results.

For children's reading, begin with definitions the child can explain in their own words. The children's dictionary guide includes a short trial you can use before choosing a resource.
