
An AWACS aircraft combines airborne sensing, communications and people who help interpret and coordinate the information. The radar dome is the visible feature; the useful capability comes from turning observations into a shared picture and connecting that picture with other decision makers.
Three connected roles
Surveillance produces observations of the environment. Picture building associates observations into tracks and integrates available information. Airborne command and control supports coordination through trained personnel, communications and assigned responsibilities.
NATO Allied Air Command describes the E-3A force in terms of air and maritime surveillance, airborne command and control, and information exchange. The aircraft is therefore best understood as part of a network of aircraft, surface organizations and crews.
Putting a sensor at altitude changes its view of the environment. Coverage still depends on geometry, terrain, the observed object, equipment and conditions. Treat a public coverage figure as a scoped description, rather than a guaranteed circle in which every object will always be identified.
A track is a processed piece of information

This example illustrates data interpretation. Actual operational procedures, tasking and authorities are determined by the organizations responsible for the aircraft and mission.
Why the 2001 deployment mattered
Following the September 11 attacks, NATO sent AWACS aircraft to help patrol U.S. airspace. Canada's Department of National Defence history of Operation Eagle Assist dates the mission from October 9, 2001 to May 16, 2002. Five E-3A aircraft began operations, followed by two more in January 2002. The account records approximately 4,300 flight hours and 360 sorties.
The UK House of Commons Defence Committee's 2002 report, paragraph 25, records seven aircraft and 830 crew members from 13 NATO nations. It places the deployment in the response under Article 5 and explains that the NATO aircraft freed U.S. assets for other operations. The mission illustrates how a shared capability supplied practical support to an ally.
Numbers from an initial deployment announcement and the full operation can describe different points in time. A history should specify whether it is counting the aircraft first sent, aircraft participating over the mission, sorties or crew members.
Follow the fleet's evolution using current primary records
NATO's current AWACS overview, checked September 10, 2026, describes a broader Alliance Federated Surveillance and Control approach connecting NATO-owned and other national and multinational assets. It also records the announcement by 11 Allies of joint procurement of up to ten Saab GlobalEye aircraft to succeed part of the E-3A fleet.
The July 7, 2026 NATO procurement announcement documents the GlobalEye decision alongside other capabilities. This is a procurement announcement; it should remain distinct from aircraft delivery, crew training and declared operational capability.
For future updates, check the exact system, participating nations, quantity basis and milestone. “Up to” expresses a ceiling in the announcement, not a count already delivered. Older descriptions of successor plans should be read with their dates visible.
