Direct Digital Dub technology and Yes DVD home video editing

LSI Logic Corporation announced Apex Digital has selected its DiMeNsion DVD recorder system processor for Apex's line of next-generation DVD recorders. The DiMeNsion 8602 processor (DMN-8602) was chosen for its unique ability to enable next-generation features like Direct Digital Dub technology and Yes DVD home video editing.

"We're thrilled to be working with LSI Logic again on our next generation of DVD recorder products," said Ancle Hsu, vice chairman of Apex. "Working with LSI Logic, we were a market leader mid-2003, coming out at $399 when other products on the market were over $499. With our next-generation products we're adding features like YesDVD and FireWire support, which we feel will be key motivators for consumers to purchase DVD recorders."

Apex's DRX9200 DVD recorder features the LSI Logic Direct Digital Dub technology, which simplifies the transfer of personal digital content from a camcorder to DVD over FireWire, with one-touch control via a single remote. The Apex DRX9300 features a slim-line chassis and is one of the first announced DVD recorder products to support the YesDVD feature, enabled by LSI Logic and YesVideo. The YesDVD feature enables automatic editing and transferring of home video from a camcorder to a DVD disc. The result is a Hollywood-style DVD of personal content, including a scene index/menu for easy navigation, three highlight videos set to music, and a printable jacket cover.

The DRX9300 leverages the benefits of LSI Logic's recently announced second-generation, single-chip design, the DMN-8602. It features LSI Logic's field-proven, flexible DoMiNo architecture, an integrated DV codec with Direct Digital Dub capability, and DoMiNoFX processing technologies for "Visibly Superior" video quality. DMN-8602 further integrates an NTSC/PAL TV encoder and a USB controller, and requires only a single unified memory subsystem. The integration of these functions into a single chip reduces design complexity and provides system designers with a considerable savings on the overall bill of materials.

"We are excited to be working with Apex on their second generation DVD recorder products like the DRX9200 and DRX9300," said Umesh Padval, senior vice president and general manager of LSI Logic's Broadband Entertainment Division. "Our highly integrated silicon and software solution enables Apex to offer new features like DVD camcorder support and YesDVD capabilities at the right retail price points."
