Recall measures how many of the true positive cases a model successfully identifies. If there are 100 real positive cases and the system finds 80 of them, its recall is 80 percent. Recall is therefore about coverage of the real positives, not about how trustworthy each positive prediction is.
Why Recall Matters
Recall matters most when missing a true case is costly. In medical screening, low recall means real illnesses may be missed. In fraud detection, it means suspicious activity slips through. In safety monitoring, it can mean important warnings are never raised. A model with weak recall may look calm and efficient while quietly failing the task it was built to support.
This is why recall is often more important than raw accuracy in high-stakes settings. If the rare positive cases are the ones that matter most, the evaluation has to reflect that reality.
Recall and Precision Work Together
A model can raise recall by flagging more cases, but that often increases false positives and lowers Precision. The right balance depends on the application. A spam filter might tolerate a different trade-off than a cancer screening system or a cyber defense tool.
That trade-off is why teams often use precision-recall curves and combined metrics such as the F1 Score. Those measures help reveal whether the system is achieving the right operating point rather than simply optimizing for the easiest-looking number.
Why Readers Should Learn It
Recall is one of the clearest concepts for understanding AI performance in practical terms. It answers the question, "Of the cases we truly needed to catch, how many did the system actually catch?" That is a very different question from "When it did flag something, was it correct?" Both matter, but they are not interchangeable.
