Micro-depots matter because the final leg of urban delivery is often the most expensive and least predictable part of the route. Drivers lose time looking for legal curb space, entering buildings, or handling repeated failed attempts. A micro-depot can reduce that friction by moving inventory closer to the customer and giving the operator more ways to complete the last handoff.

AI helps decide where a micro-depot should sit, how much inventory it should hold, when it should be replenished, and which delivery mode should serve it next. Those decisions often combine predictive analytics, GIS, routing models, and a live decision-support system rather than one standalone optimization.
In more advanced systems, operators may also use a digital twin of demand, curb access, and replenishment flows to test whether a new locker or local hub will actually reduce miles, dwell time, or failed attempts.
What To Watch
Micro-depots are not automatically efficient. If they are badly sited, poorly replenished, or disconnected from real demand, they can add extra handling and complexity without solving the actual delivery bottleneck. Their value depends on network design, local access, and how well the node fits the surrounding route structure.
