Causal inference is the discipline of estimating what effect an action, treatment, policy, message, or change actually caused. It is different from ordinary prediction. A predictive model might tell you who is likely to buy, churn, default, or improve. A causal model asks what would happen if you did something different.
How It Works
Causal inference is built around counterfactual thinking: what happened, what would likely have happened otherwise, and how confidently we can separate those two stories. Randomized experiments are often the cleanest design, but teams also use quasi-experimental methods, careful observational designs, and policy-learning methods when true experiments are limited. That is why causal inference often overlaps with experimentation, uplift targeting, and careful post-hoc evaluation.
Why It Matters
It matters because correlation can easily mislead decision-makers. A group with high response may be the group that was going to act anyway. A policy that looks associated with improvement may have been deployed only where improvement was already likely. Strong causal inference helps researchers and operators prioritize interventions that create real change instead of merely predicting who already looks different.
What Strong Practice Needs
Good causal practice needs more than a clever model. It depends on study design, data quality, clear assumptions, subgroup checks, and honest treatment of uncertainty. In practice, causal systems often sit alongside predictive analytics, uplift modeling, and model evaluation because decision teams usually need all four.
