Socket Communications and Stenograph recently announced that Stenograph has elected to recommend and offer Socket's Cordless Serial Adapter (CSA) with Bluetooth Wireless Technology to Stenograph's worldwide customer base of professional court reporters. Stenograph is the leading developer of computer aided transcription (CAT) software. Case CATalyst, a 32-bit Windows CAT product, is used by more than 11,000 professional court reporters.

"We are delighted with the mobility and freedom Socket's Cordless Serial Adapter offers our court reporting customers," said Fred Middlebrooks, executive vice president of engineering and development for Stenograph. "This wireless solution is convenient because it eliminates running cables from the shorthand machine to notebook computers in the courtroom or deposition suite." The CSA will be recommended and offered for use with Stenograph's most advanced shorthand writing machine, the Elan Mira.

During a courtroom trial, a court reporter writes everything that is being said during testimony with a shorthand machine that is connected to her notebook computer. Currently, these connections are made using a myriad of cables. By attaching a Socket CSA onto Stenograph's advanced shorthand writing machines and Bluetooth enabling the reporter's notebook computer with Socket's CompactFlash Card with Bluetooth Wireless Technology or a Bluetooth USB dongle, the connection between the devices become wireless, eliminating the need for cables.

"By offering Socket's cordless connectivity product for use with shorthand machines, Stenograph is continuing its leadership in delivering useful, state-of-the-art technology to court reporters," said Patti Cassalia, senior product marketing manager for Socket's Bluetooth wireless technology product line. "Stenograph's customers are sure to appreciate the hassle-free advantages of wireless connectivity versus using cumbersome cables."

Included in Stenograph's Cordless Serial package is a Socket CompactFlash card with Bluetooth Wireless Technology, allowing for an encrypted point-to-point connection between the court reporter's shorthand machine and computer. Stenograph expects to have the Cordless Serial package available late Spring of 2004.

Stenograph provides information technology solutions for the court reporting and captioning communities.
