Nursing Entrance Exams: Confirm Your School's Test Before You Prepare - Yenra

Identify your nursing program's required exam, sections, scores and deadlines before building a study plan.

Start with the admission requirements for your exact program and intake.

Before preparing for a nursing entrance examination, identify the exact test your intended program accepts. Schools can differ in required sections, scores, attempt limits and deadlines. A short requirements record prevents spending weeks on the wrong material and gives your study plan a clear target.

Build a requirements record for each program

Start with the official admissions page for the specific nursing program, campus and intake. Find its current admission guide and examination instructions. If two pages disagree, ask the program to confirm the applicable requirement in writing. Keep the source and date checked.

  • Exact examination name and version.
  • Required sections, overall and section minimums, and how scores affect selection.
  • Accepted testing locations or remote options.
  • Score validity period, retake interval and number of permitted attempts.
  • Deadline for the score to arrive, official transcript process and recipient.
  • Registration, identification and accommodation procedures.

Use the nursing entrance requirements worksheet to compare programs. Minimum eligibility and competitive selection are different questions: meeting a threshold may leave other admission criteria to satisfy.

Distinguish the main preparation paths

Match the material to the program's named assessment
AssessmentStarting pointWhat to confirm
ATI TEASATI's current exam and preparation guidance.Accepted version, score requirements, delivery route and transcript destination.
HESI Admission Assessment (A2)The school's A2 instructions and Elsevier/Evolve resources.Which modules are required and the local booking and retest process.
Another named assessmentThe program's admission guide and the assessment provider.Exact test identity; generic nursing entrance books may not match it.

ATI describes TEAS as reading, mathematics, science, and English/language usage, with 170 questions and 209 minutes of standard testing time. Each section has its own clock. Check ATI's current timing and navigation guidance and registration requirements.

For HESI, use the examination named in your admission instructions. Elsevier's A2 student guide explains the school/testing-center workflow and access to results. HESI also appears in nursing-program assessments at other stages; verify that your resource addresses admission.

Read a school policy as a local rule

For example, Houston City College's nursing page publishes HESI-A2 section requirements, application-period conditions and transcript instructions. That illustrates why a school's own guide matters. Apply the policy for your exact program and intake; another school's rules may differ.

Use a diagnostic to allocate study time

Once the assessment is confirmed, try current provider-aligned practice. Sort gaps by section and cause: missing prerequisite knowledge, reading the question incorrectly, a calculation error, or time pressure. Study the specific required content before adding broader nursing topics.

  • Reading: identify the main idea, evidence and purpose of a passage; explain why alternatives fail.
  • Mathematics: practice fractions, ratios, percentages, algebra and units as the exam blueprint requires. Check calculations with an estimate.
  • Science: organize required concepts into a map, explain relationships from memory and apply them in fresh questions.
  • Language: connect corrections to a rule and practice editing complete sentences.

An illustrative five-hour week might include two one-hour sessions on the weakest required section, one hour on the next priority, one hour of mixed practice and one hour of review. Include maintenance work on stronger areas. The allocation should respond to your results, not a fixed promise of readiness.

Make an error lead to a useful exercise

Keep your reasoning in the practice-review worksheet, then solve a fresh example after a delay. This is academic preparation; clinical calculations and care procedures belong to supervised professional education.

Confirm that the result reaches the program

Before the appointment, check identification, account access, approved equipment and accommodations using your provider's instructions. Afterward, follow the required official score-delivery process and verify receipt with the application portal or program. Keep a copy of the confirmation. Entrance assessment, admission, completion of nursing education and licensure are separate stages.
