"Ditch your flat hair and grungy sneakers in favor of these key elements for fall's new mood," says Teen Vogue, Editor in Chief Amy Astley. "Crimped or volumized hair; round-toe pumps; preppy basics like peacoats and plaids; and loads of ladylike tweeds and cardigans."
Teen Vogue brings the new fall mood to life in its August issue with seven must-have staples to create the perfect back to school wardrobe. "We wanted to show the strongest items from the fall runways and adapt them for our teen reader. These seven key items are perfect for every girl's back to school wardrobe and can be found in any mall or shopping center in America, "says Gloria Baume, Teen Vogue's fashion market director. Baume comments on each fashion item below:
The Tweed Blazer - The close fitting jacket was seen on every runway this fall -- in boucle, silk, brocade, velvet. The tweedy blazer is the perfect item to wear to school or dressed up with jeans and a t-shirt and heels. It also looks great with any school uniform.
Classic Cords - Corduroys have made a comeback. The classic American piece has been remade. Corduroys, once a masculine piece featured in camel and brown, are now cut like a pair of jeans -- low waisted, with stretch, a slightly flared long leg and offered in bright colors.
Lace-Up Boots - Shown up and down the fall runways, the long lace-up boot is an homage to the Victorian. These boots were seen in velvet, tweed, leather and patent leather. The lace-up boot is great with skirts and dresses.
High-Waisted Jeans - Lose your super tight, super low and cropped jeans. The high waisted jean is the style and new modern cut of the season. Today's version is not the high waisted and stiff jean made popular in the 70's by Calvin Klein and Sassoon. These jeans have a bit of stretch, are slightly flared at the bottom to give your leg a long look and are really comfortable with a slightly faded wash.
Big Bag - Gone is the messenger bag, the classic double-shouldered back pack -- what girls really want to bring to school is the modern book bag. The big bag is a slouchy, hippie, leather bag with a lot of side pockets and interesting details. It will look great with everything you wear.
Mini-Kilt - In an ode to the Highlands and Scotland the kilt made a comeback this fall. The mini-kilt is an easy piece to wear with a denim jacket and boots or dressed up with a beaded sweater, kitten heels, and pearls.
Denim Dress - Denim is the backbone of what teens love to wear -- and the 70's fit and flare dress is a laid back dress for fall. It can be worn day into night layered with a long t-shirt or turtleneck. In the evening it can be worn with broaches, a cardigan and heels.
The August issue of Teen Vogue hits news stands on July 6.
