A useful prom dress shortlist has more than a style and a price. For each option, establish the fit, the total cost, the date it will be ready and what happens if it does not work. Start with your event date, school requirements and maximum outfit budget.

Wear or borrow an existing dressYou want an early fit check and a smaller purchase list.Owner's permission, cleaning, repairs, and whether alterations are allowed.
Local boutique or department storeTrying the garment on is important.Available sample sizes, the exact garment being ordered, alteration arrangements and final-sale terms.
Online retailerYou have time to measure, receive and assess the dress.Size chart, dispatch versus arrival date, return conditions and total landed cost.
Resale or consignmentYou are open to a previous-season or previously worn outfit.Actual measurements, past alterations, condition, photos and seller protections.
RentalYou want the outfit for one event.Delivery and return dates, fit options, cleaning rules, damage fees and backup arrangements.

Look for an option you can actually wear by the event date. A promising photograph becomes a useful candidate only when the seller can answer the practical questions.

Check measurements and alterations

Use the size chart for the exact maker and style. Ask how its bust, waist, hip and length measurements should be taken; record your measurements in the units the chart uses. Ask the seller for advice when your measurements fall across sizes. A familiar size number alone is a weak basis for ordering an unfamiliar cut.

At a fitting, bring the shoes and underlayers you intend to wear. Sit down, take a comfortable step, raise your arms and check whether the neckline, closures and hem stay where you want them. If you use a mobility aid or expect to sit for much of the evening, make that part of the fitting.

Ask the person doing alterations to assess the actual garment. Request the proposed work, price, fitting dates and collection date before buying a dress that depends on those changes. Beading, layers or a particular seam arrangement may change what is practical. Keep an alternative if the work cannot be confirmed in time.

Compare the total, not just the ticket price

Make a separate line for the dress, tax, shipping, alterations, required underlayers, shoes and accessories. For a rental, include return shipping and any required fees. When comparing an outfit you own, count repairs or cleaning you actually need rather than assuming the cost is zero.

A spending limit can also simplify the decision: if neither complete outfit fits your budget, revisit borrowing, resale, simpler alterations or accessories you already own.

Verify the seller and the terms

The FTC's online-shopping guidance recommends checking sellers, total costs and return policies and keeping purchase records. Read the actual policy for the exact item, including sale or special-order exceptions. Save a copy with your order confirmation.

  • Does the item return for a refund, store credit or exchange? What is the deadline, and when does it start?
  • Must tags remain attached? Do alterations, wear, custom sizing or sale status change eligibility?
  • Who pays return shipping, and is there a restocking fee?
  • Is the promised date a dispatch estimate or an arrival commitment? What happens if it is delayed?

For a named designer, begin at the designer's own website. For example, ALYCE Paris provides a store finder. Use it to identify a possible retailer, then contact that shop about the specific size, style and terms. A directory entry does not establish current stock or guarantee a return policy.

Inspect the dress while options are still open

  1. Compare the delivered item with your confirmation: style, color, size and included pieces.
  2. Inspect the fabric, seams, fastenings and any damage before wearing it outside or authorizing changes.
  3. Try it on with the planned shoes, following the seller's return conditions.
  4. Contact the seller promptly about a problem. Keep the messages and any relevant photos.
  5. Once you decide to keep it, confirm the fitting and pickup appointments and practise moving in the completed outfit.

The result should be a dress you can wear comfortably, with its cost and timing settled before the evening begins.
