Mermaid

A Serenade of MermaidsA Serenade of Mermaids : Mermaid Tales from Around the World - Beneath the sea, off the shore of Scotland, there waits a beautiful princess cursed to live her life as a seal, except for one night each year. In Japan there lives a sea maiden who can change shape at will to become any underwater creature. And in Switzerland, in the Lake of Zug, there is a mermaid who falls so deeply in love with a human man that she will do anything to keep him beneath the water with her.

Mermaid Tales from Around the WorldMermaid Tales from Around the World - Osborne has selected and adapted 12 mermaid stories from around the world, including the Japanese "Serpent and the Sea Queen," the African "Fish Husband," the Native American "Menana of the Waterfall," and Andersen's "The Little Mermaid." She emphasizes that mermaids (unlike typical folkloric women, who are often kind, beautiful, and in need of rescue) are universally depicted as fiercely strong and independent. Indeed, the Irish "Mermaid of Gollerus" deserts her family after learning that her husband has tricked her into marriage, and the Ukrainian Natasha tests her lover repeatedly before agreeing to marry him. Howell's noteworthy illustrations render each painting in a style reflective of the traditional artwork from the tale's place of origin, ranging from decorative African designs to Grecian terra-cotta to Irish folk art. Both author and illustrator provide extensive source notes for their work. A great choice for primary read-alouds and a welcome compilation for folktale units.

Splash VideoSplash - VHS - Tom Hanks was a relatively unknown TV actor with a sitcom as his biggest credit when relatively unknown director Ron Howard (best known for his own sitcom acting) cast him in this surprise hit. It made stars of Hanks, Daryl Hannah, and John Candy and an A-list director out of Howard. Hannah is a mermaid who comes to Manhattan in search of Hanks, the guy she has twice saved from drowning. Hanks runs a business with his lovable blowhard brother (Candy). When this perfect woman shows up, Hanks can't believe his luck and plunges into a dizzyingly romantic relationship, unaware of her sea-water secret. But the mermaid needs to soak and unfurl her tail from time to time, which leads to complications, including her capture by the government for scientific study (what else?). Hanks is winningly charming and Hannah is a perfect match in this enjoyably high-spirited comedy, though the biggest laughs belong to Candy.

SirenaSirena - Donna Jo Napoli retells the Greek myth of the Sirens, whose sweet, beckoning singing caused countless shipwrecks. But did the Sirens (who Napoli imagines as mermaids) really mean for the sailors to perish? Or were these sultry singers cursed themselves? In Napoli's tale, because they are half-human, the 10 Sirens are doomed to lead short mortal lives--unless they can convince men to become their mates. But after witnessing a shipwreck in which the survivors kill one of her sisters, 17-year-old Sirena decides she would rather lose her chance at eternal life than trick a human into loving her. She vows to live alone on "an island where the first rays of sun bring sight to blind eyes.... I am going there to find new sight. I will wipe from my brain the sights I have seen and start over." Little does she know that due to a jealous goddess, a sea-serpent bite, and a dead hero, a man will come to her island and love her for herself, not just her song. Sirena is the perfect teenage heroine--questioning authority and falling in love no matter what the consequences. In creating this beautiful story, Napoli brings mythology alive for today's young adults.
