Start with the job you want software to do: record a round, show course distances, organize practice or run a simulator. Then test that job on the devices you will actually use. A useful tool should make the task easier while leaving you with records you can understand and retrieve.
Choose the main job first
Swipe the table, or focus it and use the arrow keys to see every column.
| Task | Useful functions to test | Dependencies to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Scoring | Correct tees, hole scores, penalties and edits | Course data, account requirements and handicap-service connection |
| Distances | Readable map and useful target distances | Course coverage, device location and offline behavior |
| Practice review | Session notes, shot records and useful summaries | Supported sensors, units, data capture and export |
| Simulation | Practice modes and virtual rounds | Exact launch monitor, computer, graphics and required licenses |
| Entertainment | Controls, courses and multiplayer options | Platform, controller and online requirements |
A game operated with a controller serves a different task from a simulator that receives measured shots. Check the input method before buying. For an official Handicap Index, confirm the authorized service and posting process in your country; an app’s own estimate may use a different method. See the handicap guide for the distinction.
Check the complete device chain
Write down your phone or computer model, operating system, watch or sensor, launch monitor and current subscriptions. Match the exact models to the publisher’s compatibility documentation. Include any separate hardware subscription or connector needed to transfer data.
For examples of the questions to ask, Garmin’s Golf app overview describes score history, shot maps, device syncing and premium green-contour features. GSPro’s official FAQ lists Windows computer requirements, supported launch monitors and additional prerequisites for some devices. These are documentation examples, not a ranking of products. Recheck the current requirements before committing.
For a simulator, also verify the physical installation requirements with the hardware manufacturer and installer: hitting space, safe clearance, screen or net, lighting and sensor placement. Software compatibility is only one part of a usable setup.
Run a small trial before subscribing
- Create a test round on the correct course and tees. Enter a few scores, edit an error and confirm the total. Keep invented test data out of an official handicap record.
- Try the map and text outdoors on your intended screen. Test only where device use is permitted and safe.
- Check what remains available without connectivity, following the publisher’s instructions. Record battery use during a realistic session.
- Capture a practice session and inspect individual records. Correct missing or duplicated shots before trusting summaries.
- Try the export or sharing function. Open the result elsewhere and check whether it contains the detail you need.
- Review account visibility, location permissions, cancellation and data-deletion options.
A shareable scorecard image and an export of individual shot data support different needs. Ask for a sample export if moving your history matters. Record the app version and the device used in your trial so support can reproduce a problem.
Interpret the numbers with their inputs
Look for definitions of carry, total distance, averages and excluded shots. A distance measured between two recorded locations can differ from a launch monitor’s estimated carry. Compare like with like and keep the units visible.
For strokes-gained analysis, identify the comparison group and confirm that shot locations, lies and penalties are captured accurately. Review several rounds before selecting a practice priority. A coach can help translate the pattern into a task, especially when a small sample is dominated by one unusual hole.
Calculate cost for your actual use
Add hardware, required companion subscriptions, course packs and storage if applicable. Choose the smallest plan that passes your trial, and keep a copy of any data you want to retain before changing services.
