Ginger Spice
Ginger, Zingiber officinale, the rhizome of a plant with a yellow orchid-like flower, has been cultivated for over 3,000 years in tropical Asia, and is one of the first spices to reach Europe over the caravan routes. Crystallized or candied ginger has been enjoyed by the Chinese for centuries as a sweet and spicy confection. Thai ginger spice is a close cousin to Chinese ginger. Candied ginger of whatever variety is a traditional favorite among the English and the Dutch, who once had colonies in Southeast Asia. Eat ginger spice like candy, sprinkle it over ice cream, ginger a fruit salad or a cup of tea. Add it to your favorite chutney recipe.
