Australian Rules Football, or Aussie Rules, is a fast-paced football code popular in Australia. Here are some of its special attributes and rules:
- Played on large oval fields by teams of 18 players per side + 4 interchange players
- No offside rule allows fluid movement around the large playing arena
- Teams score by kicking the ball between the opponent's goal posts to score 6 points, higher central goals earn 1 point
- Players may catch the ball directly or take possession by punching the ball forwards
- Tackling laws allow bringing an opponent to the ground to dispossess them of the ball
- No body protecting gear is worn apart from light padding and mouthguards
- A mark is taken when a player cleanly catches a kicked ball greater than 15m distance
The expansive grounds, constant motion and high scoring makes Australian Rules Football a thrilling sport for fans and players.
