Akamai and Equinix have teamed to expand its content and applications delivery platform in the U.S. and Asia.
Akamai operates the world's largest, globally-distributed computing platform, making the Internet predictable, scalable, and secure for conducting profitable e-business. The company's intelligent edge platform for content, streaming media and applications delivery comprises more than 14,000 servers in more than 1,100 networks in over 70 countries.
In addition to directly connecting to networks within Equinix's Internet hubs via private cross-connects, Akamai will utilize Equinix's GigE Exchange service in the Washington, D.C. and Silicon Valley area centers. By using this service, Akamai can streamline its network connectivity by linking to the concentration of networks operating within Equinix's centers, including every major global network, via an efficient central switching fabric. The service significantly lowers the costs of traditional data exchange arrangements by reaching partners, including key broadband networks, international carriers and content companies, within a single, centralized and neutral environment rather than by establishing point-to-point communications with partners in multiple, disparate locations.

Akamai has a broad deployment of servers for content, streaming media, and applications delivery.
