LUNAR TERRAIN READING NOTE Purpose: Compare a lunar image and terrain product while preserving scale and uncertainty. Guide: https://yenra.com/wiki/Moon_topography/ Map: https://quickmap.lroc.asu.edu/ Product documentation: https://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/missions/lro/lola_faq.htm 1. Locate a named feature; verify the map's coordinate convention. 2. Record the terrain layer and reference surface before reading elevations. 3. Compare imagery and terrain at the same extent; record illumination separately. 4. If supported, record a profile across selected points. Otherwise use documented point elevations. 5. Keep the view link and product label so the comparison can be repeated. Feature: Review date: Map/view link: Dataset and version: Latitude/longitude and east/west convention: Projection/reference surface: Grid spacing, measurement coverage and stated uncertainty: Image illumination/observation date: Profile endpoints and distance units: Rim elevation (m): Floor elevation (m): Horizontal separation (m): Relief = rim elevation minus floor elevation (m): Average slope percent = 100 * abs(relief) / horizontal separation: Average slope degrees = atan(abs(relief) / horizontal separation), converted to degrees: Vertical exaggeration of displayed profile: Unresolved local terrain and other limitations: INVENTED EXAMPLE, NOT A REAL CRATER: Rim -1200 m; floor -3000 m; horizontal separation 6000 m. Relief 1800 m; ratio 0.30; average slope 30 percent or about 16.7 degrees. Use the same elevation reference and consistent units for both endpoints. Average endpoint slope can hide a much steeper local scarp. This educational exercise establishes no landing or vehicle capability.
