Four separate 500 m squares: same total area; combined perimeter 8,000 m.
With an invented 100 m inward edge band:
Large interior = 800 x 800 = 640,000 m2.
Four small interiors = 4 x 300 x 300 = 360,000 m2.
100 m is an exercise assumption, not a general ecological threshold.
