PRINTED PLASTIC PROTOTYPES: WHAT CAN THEY PROVE ABOUT A MOLDED PART? Editable planning/verification record — Yenra Updated: October 2, 2026 Article: https://yenra.com/prototyping/ Purpose: Choose which fit, load, heat and durability questions a printed prototype can answer, and identify tests that still require production-representative parts. Intended reader: Product engineers using printed thermoplastic parts to make design decisions. HOW TO USE Save a working copy. Enter the actual specification, units, assumptions and evidence references in each field. Preserve original observations and record changes. Have the responsible reviewer resolve missing or conflicting requirements before release. Examples below are fictional teaching inputs, not process settings or acceptance standards. RECORD 1. Design decision and exact claim being tested: ____________________________________________________________ 2. Production material grade, molding route and expected service: ____________________________________________________________ 3. Prototype material grade, machine, orientation, layer and internal structure: ____________________________________________________________ 4. Conditioning, age, moisture and support-removal history: ____________________________________________________________ 5. Geometry and dimensions verified before the test: ____________________________________________________________ 6. Fixture, load in N, temperature in degrees C, duration and measurement method: ____________________________________________________________ 7. Individual results, failure modes and acceptance rule: ____________________________________________________________ 8. Production-representative follow-up and limits of the prototype conclusion: ____________________________________________________________ WORKED EXAMPLE AND LIMITS Fictional bracket screen: under the same 50 N fixture load at the specified room condition, deflections for orientation A are 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 mm; orientation B gives 1.1, 1.3 and 1.4 mm. A project screening limit of 1.2 mm admits all three A samples and one of three B samples. This small sample flags orientation sensitivity. It does not establish molded-part performance, fatigue life or a general material rating.
