Multimedia Processors: Display Pipelines, Memory and Timing Budgets Yenra | Updated September 17, 2026 Article: https://yenra.com/microprocessors/multimedia.html Purpose: Estimate and measure a display workload. These generic calculations establish budgets; verify supported modes in the exact device and panel manuals. Processor, board, software and manual revisions: Panel active width x height (pixels): Refresh (Hz) / pixel format / bytes per pixel: Actual stride (bytes per row): Framebuffer bytes = stride x height: Buffer count and other allocations: Scanout MB/s = framebuffer bytes x refresh / 1,000,000: Other reads/writes per displayed frame: Total ideal traffic and excluded overhead: Worked example: 800 x 480 x 4 = 1,536,000 bytes = 1.536 decimal MB. Two buffers = 3.072 MB. At 60 Hz, scanout = 92.16 MB/s. One source read + one destination write + scanout = 276.48 MB/s. Assumes tightly packed rows and full-frame transfers. Frame interval = 16.67 ms. These are not SH7785 specifications. Measured typical / worst frame time (ms) and workload: Concurrent bus users: Underrun / tearing / dropped update observations: Buffer-swap policy and behavior when late: Changed variable, result and acceptance decision: SOURCE REFERENCES Renesas’s SH7785 page https://www.renesas.com/en/products/sh7785 Renesas SH7785 hardware manual https://www.renesas.com/en/document/mah/sh7785-hardware-manual
