INDUSTRIAL INFRARED THERMOMETERS: CHECK THE READING Yenra | Updated September 11, 2026 Article: https://yenra.com/infrared-thermometers/ Purpose: preserve an industrial infrared measurement setup and investigate a doubtful reading. Use: identify the surface and decision first, consult the exact instrument manual, then document geometry and a suitable reference comparison. Keep temperature units explicit. Safe access and process permissions govern physical changes. SETUP Instrument model / serial / manual revision / calibration status: Decision supported / acceptable uncertainty and basis / owner: Target material / finish / oxidation / coating / location: Expected target temperature range and units (deg C or deg F): Instrument ambient conditions and units / acclimation: Target width and height mm / viewing distance mm / viewing angle: Actual optical diagram / focus range / field-of-view definition: Nominal measurement area mm / allowance around it: Emissivity setting / source and validation basis: Spectral band / window or cover compatibility: Steam, dust, contamination, reflected surroundings / lens condition: Response, averaging, peak hold / moving-part speed and units: FICTIONAL OPTICS CHECK Assume documented simplified 12:1 distance-to-spot optics over these distances. At 600 mm, nominal diameter = 600 / 12 = 50 mm, wider than a 30 mm target. At 240 mm, nominal diameter = 20 mm; check actual focus, optical offsets, received-radiation definition and safe access before using this distance. This is not the optical specification of a named instrument. Keep the target comfortably larger than the actual specified measurement area. READINGS (same surface and process state) Time | reading and units | distance mm | settings | process condition | observation: 1. 2. 3. Reference method / calibration / same surface and time / contact or radiation-source conditions: Reference result and units / IR-minus-reference difference / uncertainty: Approved surface patch, if used / material rating / equilibration / optical basis: Unresolved geometry, reflection or reference issues: Decision supported / reviewer / next check / saved setup photograph: Recheck after instrument, surface, optical path, geometry or processing-setting changes.
